19th-century Handwritten arithmetic journal from James Wilson of Bowdain, Maine. February 1810. Handwritten title reads "Arithmetic is the art of computing by numbers and is comprehended under five fundamental rules for this purpose, viz. Numeration, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division." 56 Handwritten pages. 12" x 7.5." On each page, this student's notes are typically organized with a title headline on top, description, and examples of problem-solving and computations underneath, all by hand. Lessons include, "Divison of vulgar fractions," "The rule of three," "Reduction of decimals," and more. Included as well are some personal notes of Wilson's: "Bowdain February the 13th, 1810.Tuesday morning, the sky being clear." Some dampstaining, foxing to front cover and first five pages.
