Title: Arms and Uniforms: The Age of Chivalry.
Publisher: Ward Lock Limited 1980-81, London
Publication Date: 1980
Edition: 1st Edition
(Volumes 1 and 2) and Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1983 (Volume 3). Complete three-volume set. Small 4to. Glazed pictorial paper over boards (Volumes 1 and 2), stiff glazed pictorial wrappers (Volume 3). 102pp, 109pp, 104pp. Extensive color illustrations, pictorial endpapers. Very good. Volumes 1 and 2 are first British editions and Volume 3 is a first American edition. A surprisingly scarce set, tight and nice. The Volume 1 covers "The 8th to the 15th century: Helmets and mail; Tournaments and heraldic bearings; Bows and crossbows," Volume 2 covers "Castles, forts and artillery, 8th to 15th century; Infantry of the Renaissance; Cavalry of the Renaissance; The Slavs and Orientals to the end of the Renaissance," and Volume 3 covers "The Renaissance: Arms, horses and tournaments; Helmets and armour; Tactics and artillery." The Ward Lock editions in particular do not tend to age well, with loosened spines and hinges a typical problem -- making this an unusually, exceptionally nice set indeed.
