Perry Davis and Son Providence; Rhode Island: Perry Davis & Son, [1882]. Pamphlet. A patent medicine booklet describing the invention of the "now universally known Pain-Killer" by Perry Davis, of Providence, R. I. and its uses around the world. Perry Davis was a destitute shoemaker born in Massachusetts (1791 - 1862) who sold his Pain Killer, which included alcohol and opium, as a remedy for a wide range of maladies, including dyspepsia, alcoholism and cholera. Mark Twain wrote that his mother used it to protect him from cholera, and in the Civil War it was used on both soldiers and horses. Includes a description of the enthusiastic adoption of the medicine by Australian gold miners: "the bottles of Pain Killer were scattered among the miners at the time the gold excitement ran so high in that country, and it was all the advertising that was required. The men went to Melbourne in such crowds, demanding the medicine, that the wily agent improvised an auction, and sold the medicine to the highest bidders." (p23). In text illustrations throughout, including one of the Australian auctions in Melbourne. Also includes an illustration titled "The Lacrosse Clubs of Canada use Pain-Killer" (p17). 8vo, 30 pp., advertisements [2]. Illustrated printed paper wrappers, front wrapper illustration of ships in distress at sea. In a Very Good, binding sturdy and intact, crease bottom front cover corner and top rear cover corner, a bit of sunning. A nice, clean and unmarked copy.
