Book Description Harper & Row, 1983. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. 318 pp. First U.S. edition. Art history of Brazil; 400 color photographic plates throughout. Green buckram with gilt stamped spine. Binding tight; boards clean; dust jacket with two tiny closed tears head and tail of spine; otherwise a fine copy of an oversize and heavy book that may require an additional domestic or international shipping charge. If you wish to study the art of Brazil this is the book you want. Text by Carlos Lemos, José Roberto Teixeira Leite and Pedro Manuel Gismonti. Introduction by Pietro Maria Bardi with an essay by Oscar Niemeyer. Origianlly published by Abril S.A., São Paulo, 1979. Quoting the Niemeyer essay: In order to discuss Brazilian architecture I must comment on the misunderstanding that, in my opinion, has distorted contemporary architecture. By architecture I am, of course, referring to that with reinforced concrete structures and not to that based on metal structures which prevails in the U.S. These materials have such different characteristics that normally they should constitute opposing styles, or, at least, dissimilar ones. The technique using reinforced concrete suggest to the architect the most unexpected shapes, plastic freedom and free and creative curves which the other, linear and restricting, rejects.
