About this title

Synopsis:

Illustrates and comments on examples of early photographic art, covering various subject matter and giving a brief account of the daguerreotype

From Library Journal:

Forming the nucleus of this book are 65 daguerreotypes from Richter's own collection that beautifully illustrate the richness and diversity of the first practical photographic process. Reproduced in color to reveal their masterful hand-tinting are exquisite and rare examples of the art: daguerreotypes of nudes (20 of the 65!), Niagara Falls, Cairo, the Crystal Palace, a shipyard with a vessel under construction, and individual and group portraits. Helmut Gernsheim's introduction and Richter's commentary offer little new information but will be appreciated by an audience unfamiliar with the process that inspired modern photography, which celebrates its official 150th anniversary this year. For twice the sum, a rounder, scholarly work (reproducing 100 daguerreotypes, 34 in color) is the recently released The Daguerreotype: A Sesquicentennial Celebration (Univ. of Iowa, 1989). Both are recommended.
