About this title

Synopsis:

An analysis of a decade of art, which sees the eighties as a time when painting, figuration and sculpture triumphed over modernism. The book is full of contemporary work from countries throughout the world, both familiar and unknown, aiming to typify a decade of change in art.

From Library Journal:

This follow-up to Art in the Seventies (Phaidon, 1980) by prolific British writer and art critic Lucie-Smith is certainly not the first, nor will it be the final, attempt to survey the last ten years of the international art scene. It seems early to try to put this decade in perspective, and like any premature attempt at analysis, this book is necessarily subjective. Many important artists are missing, but those included are represented by many full-color reproductions. The main focus is on painting, from German Neo-Expressionism and the Italian Trans-Avantgarde through the New York scene to California, with a chapter on sculpture and a mere four pages devoted to three photographers. An awkward indexing system and an inadequate bibliography do not help this disappointing title.
