About this title

Synopsis:

Here is a lavishly produced gallery of more than 400 western American paintings and sculptures--from the 16th century to the present--seen in the sweeping context of an exciting narrative history of this sublime, unforgiving and legendary country. 420 illustrations, 270 in full color.

From Library Journal:

What's most surprising about this lavish and popularized regional survey is the amount of history combined with the art. The entire Western saga here unfolds in the style, tone, and level of an undergraduate history text. Over 400 paintings and sculptures by 200 artists from the 16th century to the present are represented. While all the reproductions are truly magnificent, 19th-century works--the inevitable landscapes, cowboy, pioneer, and Indian scenes--receive the most attention. Contemporary Western art is slighted, and non-Anglo artists are almost entirely ignored. A useful feature is the one-page vignette biographies of about 50 prominent artists, although these are sometimes poorly placed and interrupt the narrative. Full of facts, history, and art, this is nevertheless an expensive offering that perhaps strains to accomplish a bit too much.
