Slightly yellowed; frontispiece slightl. foxed and browned. [= Arntzen/ Rainwater H100 (note)]. The painter Gerard de Lairesse (1641-1711) from Liège came to Amsterdam in 1667. Initially impressed by Rembrandt, he soon became more interested in French classicist art theory. He applied these new ideas in his work and painted in a clear style mainly classical subjects from ancient times. De Lairesse produced many room and ceiling paintings with real trompe l'oeil representations. Around 1690 De Lairesse went blind. Then he devoted himself entirely to the theory of art. The blind painter gave lectures, which he bundled in The Art of painting. Lairesse's writings had a great influence in the 18th century. Seller Inventory # 954051
