About this title

Synopsis:

Book by O'Keefe, Tom

From Booklist:

Swanson's atelier in Arizona partakes of his surroundings: a dry climate; craggy, jagged landscapes; and Navajo people. The canvases it produces, about 150 of them reproduced here in vibrant full color, have earned their creator a devoted clientele, and the Cowboy Artists of America have duly inducted him into their ranks. A self-taught painter whose first career was aeronautical engineering, Swanson clearly is overjoyed with his preferred artistic calling, which began in the 1960s with workmanlike landscapes, predominantly of rusting hulks on abandoned Midwest farms. When he moved to Arizona, he adopted a style akin to photo-realism in depicting his subjects, often elder Navajos shepherding their flocks or their young children at play. Lately Swanson has branched into other groups at work outdoors--Hopi, cowboys, Inuit, Nepalese, and Italians--all captured in his punctiliously accurate manner. In showcasing an award-winning talent popular in the Southwest, the publisher cuts no corners; production values are outstanding--a pleasant surprise from such a small press. Gilbert Taylor
