Description:

York Beach Maine: Teitan Press, 2013. First US edition Hardcover, Quarto 128pp. Fine red cloth titled in gilt on spine and with design by Norton on the upper board. Endpapers with printed design by Norton. Printed on heavy weight acid-free art paper, sewn. Frontispiece and 31 full page black & white plates, plus several smaller drawings. Edition Limited to 650 copies. The first US edition of this magnificent book of occult-inspired artist Rosaleen Norton's drawings, with poems by Norton and her lover Gavin Greenlees. The original edition was published in Sydney, Australia, in 1952 and immediately sparked a furor on account of its occult and erotic imagery, and its iconoclastic jabs at the status quo and the authorities who defended it. The 1952 edition was soon banned from importation into the USA on the grounds of obscenity and also had a restricted circulation in Australia, with a court ruling that some of the plates had to be 'blacked out' before copies could legally be sold. It was reprinted in Sydney in 1982, but with a number of changes and omissions. This Teitan Press edition is the first US publication of the book, and the first reprint to include a complete facsimile of the original 1952 edition. The facsimile is prefaced by a new 40 page historical Introduction by Keith Richmond who has previously edited several books of Norton's writings, and wrote the text of the "Occult Visions of Rosaleen Norton" exhibition catalogue. In glossy printed dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description Walter Glover, Sydney, 1952. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Signed Limited Edition. 79pp, bibliography, glossary, 31 bw plates, pictorial endpapers. Or red cloth with gilt title and decoration. Hand bound by Alan Cross. Minor wear at head and foot of spine, some foxing as usual, prev owners name at top of limitation page, bookmark ribbons present but detached. Limited edition of 1000 (650 in cloth) of which this #432. Numbered and signed on limitation page. This book was banned immediately on publication under the then current obscenity laws. The publisher tried to circumvent this by sending most of the print run overseas - those sent to the US were seized and burnt by the customs authorites and elswhere the book did not sell well and most copies were dumped as they could not be reimported to Australia. Within Australia the publisher tried to circumvent the ruling by blacking out the 2 offending plates but few were willing to pay for a defaced book. This example is one of very few remaining uncensored copies with all plates (including the banned Fohat and The Adversary) present and untampered with. The only sign of the ruling is that the statement of registration at the GPO for transmission by post has been crossed out. It is suggested that less than 20 examples of the censored version remain extant, and that the original uncensored version is even scarcer. Norton modelled for Norman Lindsay and her work is often compared to his in style. Very important in the history of Australian publishing and censorship. Size: 4to. Signed by Artist.
