One of 350 copies designed and printed by Peter Koch. Reprinted, with an excellent and extensive introduction by Richard H. Dillon, from the issue of 1853. Small quarto. [4], 71pp. Title page portrait, 5 illustrations from early engravings, one facsimile. Red cloth-backed pictorial boards, paper spine label. A mint copy with publisher's slipcase. A fictitious biographical tale of an American charlatan named Grovenor Layton during the California Gold Rush and his convincing story of robbery, murder, and arson, ending with his own lynching in Sonora, California. "Another example of fiction presented as fact" (Kurutz). Dillon calls this work, "the best-written book in terms of . seeming authenticity." The original edition is very rare. The Argonaut Book Shop was founded in 1941 in the middle of the financial district of San Francisco. The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by. The bookstore occupies one large room open to the public. One will find antique bookcases filled with fine and rare books, mostly dealing with the history of California and the American West. One will also find fine press books and other rare subject matter. The shop also carried good books in varied subject areas including art, maritime, American civil war, books on antiques, literature, regional Americana, etc..
