About this Item

Quarto. Unpaginated (20pp.). Original green cloth backed color illustrated boards with red and blue lettering on cover. Four short stories in rhymes for children with illustrations by Walter Trier. A three verse rhymed poem in the stile of Erich Kästner inked onto the front endpaper by Arthur Bauer, dedicated to Vera, dated 20. December 1930, although the publication date is 1931. Erich Kästner was a poet, writer, and satirist, and though known as an important intellectual in Berlin during the decade leading up to the Nazi reign, he was best known for his children's books, in particular "Emil und die Detektive." After the Nazis took over in 1933 he decided, after a brief stay in Switzerland, to stay in Berlin because he felt he could chronicle the times better staying in Germany. Subsequently he was interrogated by the Nazis several times and eventually witnessed the infamous book burning on May 10th, 1933 in person. Walter Trier on the other hand was bitterly opposed to the Nazis and emigrated to London in 1936 where he helped the British Ministry of Information produce anti-Nazi leaflets and political propaganda. Prior to the Nazi takeover Trier and Kästner collaborated on most of Kästner's important children's books. Text in German. Binding rubbed and bumped at corners. Cover flexed producing vertical cracks from top to bottom through Arthur's arm and hand. Face of Arthur scuffed as if to produce white beard. Penciled notations in Sütterlin handwriting, possibly young child's exercise for school, on back cover. Vera's name penciled on inside front cover. Small smudge in middle right and traces of flexing of cover on inside cover. Poem and dedication on front endpaper. Title page is trimmed 1/2 inch from bottom by publisher therefore cuts through very bottom of publication date. Light foxing on a few pages of block. Binding and interior in overall good+ condition.
