When the Civil War erupted, Edward A. Pollard was principal editor of the Richmond Examiner, published in the capital city of the Confederacy. He was perfectly situated for someone who would go on to recount the events of the War Between the States from the viewpoint of the South. Pollard once noted, "The war has left the South its own memories, its own heroes, its own tears, its own dead," and this sweeping, detailed historical record remains an enduring monument to them. Knowing that future generations would learn about the Civil War from the point of view of the victorious North, Pollard set down for posterity the Confederate side of the rift in almost twenty books. Here, in Southern History of the War, are vivid portraits of the personalities that shaped the Confederacy, dramatic accounts of significant battles and campaigns, and, most historically significant, a rare interpretation of the events of that wartime era by an eyewitness and talented journalist. Pollard was a staunch Confederate, and his account of the Civil War is, of course, imbued with his own political bias. Although it lacks the relative impartiality of a history written after an interval of years, this work conveys the powerful emotions and immediate thoughts of a keen observer of the events and issues that sparked the War Between the States. The author, expressing the aspirations of the South, discusses the slavery issue and the Southern belief in the sovereign right of the individual states versus the primacy of the Union, and traces the major occurrences of the war years. Yet Pollard is still dispassionate enough to criticize the Confederate government and, most particularly, its president, Jefferson Davis. This volume certainly remains a significant historical document, chronicling the South's secession from the Union and its return in defeat. Southern History of the War is a moving and absorbing account of this momentous era in the history of the United States. EDWARD A. POLLARD was the editor of the Richmond Examiner during the Civil War years, and wrote many books championing the Southern cause, including The Lost Cause.
