From the introduction: "This exhibition is to show, primarily, what major artists of Western Europe and the United States have contributed in book during the last hundred, and especially, the last sixty 'explosive' years. The main purpose of the exhibition is to demonstrate to the English-speaking world that during the last century the book has, in fact, become a major vehicle of artistic expression: that it is one in which the artist is not necessary secondary to the author, but it is often and rightly his equal."
