About this Item

London: H. F. & G. Witherby, (1930). Quarto, cloth, in a dust wrapper. 80 pages, plus twenty full-page plates by Aldin. Dust wrapper a little worn and soiled; book itself is in fine condition. First Edition. The artist's models in this instance are the artists own pet dogs, to whom he has devoted an entire studio, which houses over two thousand sketches, among which are the twenty chosen for inclusion here. Cecil Aldin (1870-1935) was an English illustrator who achieved early success as a comic illustrator, contributing to numerous periodicals in the 1890's and designing posters. He was an especially avid hunter, and confessed frankly that he practiced art for the sole purpose of obtaining the wherewithal to hunt. Even so he was immensely popular for a long period. Most of his book illustrations were of canine subjects, in which he excelled. He also excelled in the horses and outdoor sports like fox hunting, and became one of the leading spirits in the renaissance of British sporting art. Bookseller Inventory # 11301
