About this Item

Folio. [4], 20pp (text), CL leaves (plates). Original 3/4 black morocco over burgundy cloth with gold lettering on spine. Marbled endpapers. Additional decorative title page. In the present work there are one hundred and fifty plates, arranged in six parts, each containing 25 plates. In addition are an old map and several reproductions of title pages and illuminated borders from Persian books, one of which, a 16th century Persian design, is used for the enrichment of the pages of the text . The first four parts of the work are devoted to the Jaipur carpets. The fifth is reserved for the famous Ardebil carpet, which is now one of the glories of the Indian Museum; and the last part contains, in addition to Persian carpets, a few from Turkey, which have been included to illustrate some of the main differences in design and workmanship between them and the Persian examples ." (p. 15). There are 7 b/w descriptive key plates which explain the design and the identity of carpet style. As indicated at verso of title, many of these patterns were taken from the original carpets by draughtsmen at Jaipur, with the permission of H. H. Maharaja Sewai Madho Singh, under the supervision of Colonel Sir Swinton Jacob, for many years Sup. Engineer at Jaipur. All plates but one (plate CI, which is a collotype) are chromolithographs. The striking chromolithographs are by W. Griggs, chromo-lithographer to the King. Plate size: 19" x 14"; Image size: 17 3/4" x 12 1/2". Joints rubbed with slight abrasion to morocco. Covers slightly darkened. Inner hinges reinforced by professional tape. Minor abrasion on inside of back cover due to removal of previous owner's bookplate. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in very good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 35512
