Translated by James Spence Harry from Firmin Didot's edition of the Viscount's works. Illustrated by Gustave Dore. An attractive copy in decorative binding in brown cloth over beveled boards with elaborate gilt and black stamping on front and spine. Front cover with artwork of the lovers in gilt against a forest background stamped in black. The story of Atala and her lover, Chactas. Set in the early eighteenth century wilderness of the Natchez Indian tribe (Louisiana). Book is complete with 30 dramatic full page plates by Gustave Dore, each with facing caption leaf, plus several smaller illustrations as chapter heads and tailpieces. Gift inscription on first blank leaf. No other markings. All edges brightly gilt. Cover edges moderately rubbed. Minor fraying at the head and heel of the spine. Decorative printed endpapers. Binding is solid and contents clean and bright. 10" x 13-1/4". 48 text pages plus plates and caption pages. A beautiful example of a scarce first printing by Belford, Clarke & Co.
