About the Book

Bibliographic Details

Title: Atalanta in Calydon : and Lyrical Poems

Publisher: Bernhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig, Germany

Publication Date: 1901

Binding: Hardcover

Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good

Publisher's 3/4 leather binding with gilt lettering on spine. Rubbing. 304 pages, Vol. 3522 in the publisher's "Collection of British Authors" series. Bookplate on endpaper, and inscription on fly leaf, "Fred W. Carpenter Rome Italy 1902". This is a collection of poems by Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909), influential English poet, novelist and critic. It was owned by Fred W. Carpenter, who was William Howard Taft's (1857-1930) personal secretary from 1900-1910, during Taft's tenure as Governor-General of the Philippines (1901-1904), Secretary of War (1904-1909) and his first year as President. In 1910, he resigned to take up a post as Minister of Morocco, purportedly for his health, but it may have been because he could not effectively handle the duties of personal secretary to the President. In 1902, Taft visited Rome to negotiate with Pope Leo XIII for the purchase of Philippine lands owned by the Roman Catholic Church. It is safe to assume that Mr. Carpenter accompanied him, and inscribed this book as a remembrance. Bookseller Inventory # 015839
