About this title:

Synopsis: Excerpt from Athalie
Born at La Ferte-Milon (near Chateau-Thierry, Aisne) in 1639, died 1699. His parents were: Jean Racine, "controleur au grenier a sel," and Jeanne
Sconin, daughter of "le procureur du roi aux eaux et forets de Villers-Cotterets." At the age of four, his parents being dead, he was placed under the care of his paternal grandmother, Marie des Moulins. On the death of her husband, Marie retired to Port-Royal des Champs, a change of dwelling that was to have a great effect on Racine's future life.
In 1649 Le entered the College at Beauvais; went in 1655 to the Jansenist school of Port-Royal, where he received a good classical education; and began his "cours de logique" at the Lycee Saint-Louis (then the "College d'Harcourt") at Paris, 1658. For some time he studied theology under an uncle, Antoine Sconin, Vicaire-general at Uzes, but never took orders, returning finally to Paris. Here he wrote several poems and plays, leading a jolly life in the company of his literary friends and to the grief of his old masters at Port-Royal.
