Book Description James R. Osgood, Boston, Massachusetts, 1866. Condition: Good. First edition thus. Single volume --six issues bound without covers and advertisements. Small quarto, 9 1/2" tall, pages 1 to 780 three-quarter black leather over marbled boards with gilt spine titles. A good, clean, sturdy hard cover with general exterior shelf wear, leather rubbed through to boards at the fore-corner tips, spine leather scuffed at edges top and bottom and leather back strip; hinges and binding solid, paper clean and moderately yellowed, with a small private library stamp on the front endpaper. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates.
