About this Item

Fourth, enlarged edition; 2 volumes, large oblong folio plus an octavo volume of tables; the atlas with 2 preliminary leaves plus 16 star charts printed in color, laiminate overlay and key to symbols laid in; tables volume with 369 pages; both in matching beige buckram lettered in blue on upper covers; atlas with some mild waterstains on the covers; overall, very good. Antonín Becvar (1901-1965) was a Czech astronomer among whose chief achievements was the foundation of the Skalnaté Pleso Observatory and the discovery of the comet C/1947 F2 (Be vá ). Be vá is particularly important for his star charts: he led the compilation of the Atlas Coeli Skalnate Pleso (1951), published by Sky Publishing Corporation as the Skalnate Pleso Atlas of the Heavens, which was the state-of-the-art atlas of its kind until Wil Tirion's Sky Atlas 2000.0 was published in 1981. The asteroid 4567 Becvar and the crater Becvar on the Moon were named in his honor. American Avant-garde composer John Cage used Becvar's star charts as the basis of several of his works.
