Book Description Howard W. Sams & Co., Inc. & The Bobbs Merrill Co., Inc., Indianapolis, 1959. Cloth. Book Condition: About Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: About Very Good. Diagrams / Photos / Charts (illustrator). First Edition. Octavo. Indianapolis: Howard W. Sams & Co., Inc. & The Bobbs Merrill Co., Inc., 1959. First Edition and First Printing, April, 1959. Signed, inscribed and dated by the author on the ffep, to Science Fiction great Hugo Gernsback, in the first month after publication, on May 24, 1959. Good plus to about very good, clearly put to substantial use by Gernsback. Soiling to covers, modest spine fade, corners a bit bumped; see scans. Dust jacket is edge tattered but complete, showing the original $ 19.95 price tag - rather dear for the time. See scans. A one-of-a-kind first edition, first printing copy of Tremaine's lauded and still much-sought comprehensive 1,269 page study of audio electronics, inscribed by him to Hugo Gernsback, and signed on May 24th of 1959. The Luxembourg-born Gernsback is best known for his spectacular feel for the publishing of golden age science fiction (most notably through Amazing Stories), and is credited with starting the modern era of sci-fi. The celebrated Sci-fi award, the Hugo, is named after him. Nonetheless, Gernsback started as an electronics businessman, and was successful at that; he was a primary popularizer of amateur radio in the U.S., founding the Wireless Association of America in 1909, and established the radio station WRNY. Though he had tried his hand at science fiction with "Ralph 124C 41+" in 1911, it was in fact through his electronics publications - Modern Electronics, Electrical Experimenter and Science and Invention - that he phased into sci-fi publishing by including stories in those magazines. For this reason, his copy of the Audio Cyclopedia - this one - can be considered to be a piece of both science fiction and elctronics history. A well-used (as one might expect) but still solid copy. Tremaine's inscription reads: "To Hugo Gernsback - whom I have long admired from the early days of the 'Electrical Experimenter' and your predictions of 'Things to Come'. Sincerely, H.M. Tremaine, Hollywood, Cal. May 24-1959" . "Things to Come" is a reference to the famous prognosticative Alexander Korda sci-fi epic of that name from 1936. A very, very singular piece. l-46n. Signed and Inscribed By Author. Bookseller Inventory # 000936
