A brother and sister visit their ecology-minded Aunt Ippy and her world-famous Museum of Junk
Reviews:
Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Aunt Ippy never throws anything away and her garage overflows with junk. The best things, however--tires and toys, scraps, old car parts, and odds and ends--are on display in her museum. One busy day, Mr. McCorkle comes looking for something called a "Roto-Spinner," and the children help Aunt Ippy find one among her boxes. It turns out to be a beautifully useless thing, spinning, beeping, ringing, and whirring. Greenblat's exuberant, brightly colored, full-page pictures are done in a naive, cartoon style, with flat paints, crayons, and colored pencils. They are well suited to the comic mood and simple plot. The book has no particular ecological message, but Aunt Ippy's devotion to "waste management" can lead to a discussion about what makes junk, and what can be done with the world's abundance of useless trifles. --Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ

Jodi and Jimi, who accompanied their uncle on a car-buying expedition in Greenblat's Uncle Wizmo's New Used Car , here introduce their Aunt Ippy, who is an expert at "waste management." This dedicated recycler has built a raft out of plastic milk jugs and a tall tower of toilet-paper tubes. But what the resourceful woman is really famous for is her Museum of Junk, a marvelous barn-like structure--adorned with classical columns--where she displays anything she can't find a use for. When a man appears in search of a Roto-Spinner, Jodi and Jimi help their aunt scour the museum for the elusive item. Readers will be delighted to join the search party as it wanders through the Grand Parlor of Scraps, the Gallery of Absurd Bulk and the Chamber of Odds and Ends. Greenblat's wit and imagination are very much in evidence in his droll cartoons. With luck, readers will meet more of Jodi and Jimi's eccentric relatives in future books. Ages 5-9.
