About this Item

Holograph letter of two 6" x8" sheets, written rectos only, dated (19)34. Clean, bright condition, one mailing fold across center. The letter is in answer to a fan who wrote Goldsmith requesting a photograph. Goldsmith discusses early major league players such as Ross Barnes (".was with our club in 1877." and tells of a game between the Guelph, Ontario Maple Leafs and Tecunsehs of London (Ontario) to open the 1876 season, a game in which Goldsmith was the pitcher. Signed "Fred" Fred Goldsmith (1856-1939) was a prominent player in baseball's early professional years. He played with the New Haven Dark Blues in the National Association in 1875 (the year before the National League was founded), the Troy Haymakers in 1879, the Chicago White Stockings (ancestors of the present-day Cubs) from 1880 to 1884 and with Baltimore in the American Association (then also a major league) also in 1884. Written materials of any kind from players of the earliest days of the National League are exceedingly rare. Two short Goldsmith signed notes sold in at auction in 2012 for $1760 ans $1890 respectively. (PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT PROVIDE COPIES OF UNIQUE, MANUSCRIPT, OR SIGNED MATERIALS.
