Early American edition of an important Mennonite hymnal, without music; tunes indicated by titles. Evans calls this substantial song book, which originally appeared in 1583 and was first published in the U.S. in 1742, "highly esteemed by the Mennonites," and notes that it "contains songs on martyred christians, especially Baptists, persecuted, tortured and killed by other christians" (Evans 4884). The appendix includes Thomas von Imbroich's Confessio. Provenance: Laid-in printed bookplate, with American eagle, of Miss Eliza Miller. 8vo (16.5 cm, 6.5"). [10], 812, [10], 103 (i.e., 102) pp. (lacking 425?36). Evans 18919; ESTC W20963; Arndt & Eck 627. Contemporary mottled sheep, rebacked with mottled calf, spine with gilt-stamped leather title and publication labels, one clasp (of two) surviving; pp. 425?36 lacking. First few leaves with edges chipped where clasps pressed, first and last few leaves waterstained, other moderate staining throughout, some corners dog-eared, all as typical of German-American books of this sort.
