About this Item

Mrs. Cowie, an alcohol Prohibition crusader, is here billed as "World's Representative W.C.T.U./ Appointed Geneva, Switzerland, 1902." Sent to live with her uncle upon her mother's death in the 1860s, the author as a child found that family to be "cursed by drink," and the rest is history. This "New Edition Revised" is priced "4/0 (One Dollar) Post Free," a somewhat odd order of preference for a Los Angeles printer, indicating this edition may have been intended primarily for Australian or British distribution. Glossy frontispiece photo of the author in dress and hat circa 1901-1902, but this is presumably a 1940s reprint. Author's afterward lists an Hawaiian address, and the author reportedly departed Hawaii for the mainland U.S. in late 1941/early 1942, as civilian women were advised to do. Inscribed in ink to the FFE "Yours in our Saviour's matchless love," signed "Bessie Lee Cowie," and dated (year only) with a hard-to-read third digit, but presumably "1941." Book will close its text block, but we grade only "good" due to modest rub and spine roll, a troubled rear hinge where someone has attempted a partial Scotch tape repair, and most of all because we are unhappy with the pattern of small holes along the hinges, possibly indicating an ancient attack by boring insects. (This book was recently frozen at zero degrees F. for several weeks as a precaution.) Yellow print-only DJ is intact but chipped to head and foot of spine; missing a one-inch triangular chunk to lower outside corner of the DJ rear panel, somewhat discolored to spine, and showing some ill-advised Scotch tape repair both to reverse at spine and to the OUTSIDE of rear panel. All that said, book is holding together well and is easily read, and the DJ is original. But the main attraction here, obviously, is the author's uncommon inscription. (PLEASE NOTE: The word "inscribed" means the author has written words other than her name in this book. We strongly urge potential buyers to examine the attached scans before ordering our inscribed books.) Reduced from $35. Bookseller Inventory # 001816
