[Autobiography] REVISED AND ENLARGED EDITION. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.[8] 256. With a frontisportrait of Henson, facsimile signature underneath. Numerous other illustrations throughout. 'Opinions of the press' section preceding text. Publisher's pictorial cyan paper over boards, price of 1/6 to spine. Moderately toned internally, sparsely spotted though heavier towards endpapers and front/rear blanks. Ownership inscription in black ink to flyleaf, blue '6' in pencil to pastedown. Front hinge starting but stable. Edges toned and marked. Binding rubbed, marked, and toned - especially to spine. Instances of splashing to boards. Muslin visible through joints, but stable. Mild edgewear. Good. A harrowing narrative of Henson's upbringing as a slave in Antebellum America. A recount of all the tortures and punishments that were inflicted upon him and his family, as well as his eventual escape to Dawn, Canada. Henson's story is thought to be the inspiration for Harriet Beecher Stowe's successful Christian novel 'Uncle Tom's Cabin,' a link which later editions of his autobiography (such as this one) encouraged.
