About this Item

Autograph letter signed to the critic R.H. Wilenski about his portrait of Wyndham Lewis: ÒLewis is not in very good shape IÕm afraid although perhaps my portrait draws a larger sense of desolation from him than is there. It often happens with my work as you know, whether I intend it or not. He is rather deaf and sleepy most of the time but he will suddenly emerge with talk as fierce and brilliant as ever.Ó He continues to write and Ayrton has spent two months on six drawings for The Human Age Òwith reverence and delightÓ. Reginald Howard Wilenski (1887Ð1975) was a supporter of Percy Wyndham Lewis (1882Ð1957) from the 1920s. Lewis and Michael Ayrton (né Gould, 1921Ð1975), close friends at the end of LewisÕs life, were indissolubly linked in the enterprising joint exhibition ÒWord and ImageÓ held at the National Book League in 1971. AyrtonÕs powerful 1955 portrait in oils of Lewis, commissioned by the latterÕs publishers Methuen, is now in the Tate. From the collection of Jonathan Gili. Bookseller Inventory # 14958J
