About this Item

This conservative British politician was a Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force pilot during World War One, then was elected to Parliament in 1922, serving until 1945; he also held posts at the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Aircraft Production, and from 1939 to 1945 served as chairman of the British Film Institute; he was knighted in 1929 and raised to the peerage shortly before his death in 1945. ALS, 2pp, 4½" X 7¼", London, England, 1938 February 16. Addressed to Pauline Astor Spender Clay (1880-1972, widow of Herbert Henry Spender Clay, 1875-1937, Member of Parliament and Privy Counsellor). Near fine. On letterhead bearing an oval "House of Commons" blind emboss, Brassn handsomely pens his condolences to the recently-widowed Mrs. Spender Clay. He remarks, "I have known Bertie ever since I entered the 'House' in 1922, and have been a member of his group since its inception. His kindness and charm endeared him to all parties in the House. He will be sadly missed by his many friends whom he enchanted with his courtesy, modesty and humour. The Country has lost a great gentleman whom it could ill afford to spare." Most attractive.
