Autograph letter signed (5 x 8 inch) of one page. In this letter to William Bartlett Sewall (1782-1869) Gardner asks Sewall for a copy of the Sewall Coat of Arms. On the back of the letter Sewall has drafted a response in pencil (not signed) stating that the various designs he has are not exactly a coat of arms, but he will send along what he has. Gardner (1827-1888) was a Massachusetts lawyer who served on the Mass. Supreme Court (1885-88). Sewall was a long time Maine lawyer and writer. Bookseller Inventory # 10244
