About this Item

One page letter,10 x 8 inches folded in half. Fold lines, glue (?) residue on fold. Dated September 9, 1860. Henry Laurens Dawes (1816-1903) was a Representative and Senator from Massachusetts, most famous for the "Dawes Act" which called for the division of Indian lands into parcels to be owned by individual Native Americans. He writes this polite, friendly letter to Thomas D. Eliot (1808-1870), a fellow Representative from Massachusetts, thanking him for his note, describing his recent bout of illness, and giving his regards to Eliot's family.
