Description:

This British Indian Army officer is best remembered as Prime Minister Winston Churchill's trusted chief military assistant during World War Two; later chief of staff to Lord Mountbatten of Burma in India, he became NATO's first Secretary General in 1952, serving until 1957. ALS, 2pp, 4 3/4" X 7½", London, England, n.y. Addressed to Pamela Bright. Very good. Faint original folds. On pale blue letterhead with blind-embossed "Offices of the War Cabinet, / Great George Street, / S.W. 1" imprint and crest, Ismay boldly pens in thick ink in his hurried, illegible scrawl a friendly avuncular note to a friend. "It's your birthday today, and I send you my wishes, my blessings and my love. There's only one person in this world who doesn't realize what a grand person is Pamela Bright -- and that is you. I wish I could take you out to dinner tonight -- and give you a good scolding (in the confusion of a good meal!). It is so naughty of you to underrate and belittle one of the bravest and most unselfish and capable of God's creatures. However, I will reserve my lecture until the next date we meet. Meanwhile, my love, and ever good wish for the tremendous days that lie ahead. Aren't we lucky to be living in these days, and allowed to have a share in these trials." A postscript adds, "I liked your [?] very much indeed. You must stick to your writing. It ought to attest to your unselfish spirit, because you are giving to others." Signed simply "Pug," Ismay's nickname among friends. Superb personal contents. Undated, but perhaps near the warís end when the Allied cause was looking bright. Bookseller Inventory #
