About this Item

The son of Edward George Bulwer Lytton was himself a noted poet, often under the pseudonym Owen Meredith; he was 1st Earl of Lytton, a noted diplomat and politician who served as viceroy of India (1875-80) and ambassador at Paris (1887-91). ALS, 3pp (lettersheet), 4½" X 7", n.p., n.y. [ca. 1868]. Addressed to "My dear Chapman" -- Edward Chapman (1804-80), cofounder of the publishing firm Chapman and Hall. Very good. Blank fourth leaf tipped to similar size heavy album leaf. On black-bordered mourning stationery, a frustrated-sounding Lytton beseeches his publisher to "pray see that I have some proofs of Chronicles & Characters at once. We are losing time, & there really is not a day's time to spare. Let me know if duplicate Sheets of the approved portion of Chronicles & Characters were forwarded to America by last Tuesday's mail; & if not when they will be sent." Signed simply "R Lytton." At the top of the first leaf an intriguing note is pencilled in an unknown hand: "Opened by order of Lady / WLB." Chapman & Hall did publish this two-volume poem in 1868 -- Lytton once called it "an attempt at a poetic history of the education of man.". Bookseller Inventory # 22669
