About this Item

The brothers Murray were New York bankers and politicians -- older brother William served in Congress as a Democrat (1851-55) before switching allegiance and helping to organize the Republican party in 1856, while younger brother Ambrose served Congress as a Republican from 1855 to 1859. ALS, 1p (lettersheet), 8" X 10", Goshen, NY, 1863 September 26. Addressed to William H. Seward, Secretary of State. Near fine. Strong folds (none weakened). William Murray boldly pens in brown ink this missive: "Capt. Henry S Murray of the 124th Regt. Y.Y. Vols. now at Parole Camp, Annapolis, Md., wishes to obtain leave of absence for a short time to visit his home in Goshen. He was severely wounded at Chancellorsville Va. and was paroled on the 4th May last and has not yet been exchanged. I you can consistently, use your influence with the Hon: Secretary of War, in procuring him a furlough, you will greatly oblige us and add another to the many favors received from you." Signed at the close by all three. The parole camp at Annapolis was infamous for its poor conditions, and Confederates released captured, wounded soldiers to this Union site on the condition they not return to combat roles until exchanged for Confederate POWs. Henry S. Murray (1841-74) was indeed captain of Company B of this well-known regiment, nicknamed the "Orange Blossoms," which saw action from Manassas through Lee's surrender at Appomattox; he rose to the rank of major. Presumably either William or Ambrose was Henry's father and the other his uncle, but which we do not know -- and Grier's relationship too is unclear. Intriguing, though -- Congressmen brothers requesting special treatment for a son/nephew -- and worth further research. Bookseller Inventory # 40551
