About this Item

This Union officer is best known for penning such military histories as "The Fifth Army Corps" (1896), "Records of Living Officers of the U.S. Army" (1890), "Officers of the Army and Navy (Volunteer) Who Served in the Civil War" (1893), "List of Officers of the Army of the U.S. from 1779-1900" (1900) and "Officers of the Army and Navy (Regular and Volunteer) Who Served in the Civil War" (1894). ALS, 2pp (single leaf), 8" X 10", New York, NY, 1893 May 27. Addressed to Captain N. Appleton of Boston. Very good. Mildly age toned, with bit of wear along left margin. Excellent content concerning what would become Powell's best known book, his 1896 "The Fifth Army Corps," reading in part: ".the 'History of the 5th A. Corps'. will possibly take in Chancellorsville, leaving the Gettysburg campaign to commence the 2d volume. This however is not positive. I wish to make the two volumes equal, and as the story of General Porter takes up a chapter (a long one) in the first volume, I may have to close that with the close of Burnside's commandership of the A.P. I would like very much to make this work the best history that has been published; but pictures are expensive luxuries in a subscription book. Publishers will take hold of a military work without payment in full for a letter-press edition; that is why I am soliciting subscribers. I wish some Boston firm would take hold and print it, and be satisfied with getting at least expenses out of it. I should be glad to get some of the sketches to which you refer -- they, with some others I have, will make a pleasant addition to the history." Ironically, Powell wasn't able to get this book published until 1896 -- by G.P. Putnam's Sons in New York. A handsome letter, beautifully penned in Powell's superb script, with great content. Unusual. Bookseller Inventory # 28443
