About this Item

Measures 11.5 x 18.5 cm. Singled sheet headed Elliott Place, Blackheath and dated 28 June 1840. To "Mr. Buck Howards? Printing Office". Inquiring about receiving "cuts" to be inserted in "proofs". Thompson was a prolific author (economics) and journalist who became proprietor of the Westminster Review in 1829. From 1808-10 (at age 25) he was appointed as the first governor of Sierra Leone. He also served in the army and saw duty in the Peninsular War against Napoleon. He was also sent as the British representitive to a Persian Gulf treaty negotiation in 1820 which produced the first international treaty that included the definition of slavery as a crime. He retired from the army in 1821. Included with the letter is an obituary from The Standard, Sept. 9, 1869. Bookseller Inventory # 07429
