Description:

This daughter of business magnate and philanthropist Cornelius Vanderbilt II married into married into the similarly well-endowed Whitney family, but was an accomplished sculptor in her own, executing many notable public monument commissions; as a patron of the arts, she is best known as founder of New York's famed Whitney Museum of Modern Art. ALS, 3pp (lettersheet), 5" X 6", New York, NY, 29 December n.y. Addressed to John Barrett (1866-1938, American diplomat and director general of the Pan American Union). Very good. First leaf faintly age toned, else near fine. Boldly and attractively penned on her 2 West Fifty-Seventh Street letterhead Whitney discusses her commission for the Organization of American States, whose Pan American Union Building had been cornerstone-laid in 1908 and would be dedicated in 1912 -- thus dating this undated letter to circa 1910. "I had a visit from both Mr. Cret and Mr. Kelsey this afternoon and with joy I learned of the extension of time. I have been working very hard on the fountain and it is pretty well along, but I feel that every week will make it more possible for me to improve it & I do so want it to be as good as I can make it. Do let me know when you are in town again as I want very much to hear a criticism from you on it." Paul P. Cret (1876-1945) and Albert Kelsey (1870-1950) were the architects who designed this Washington, DC landmark building which contains Whitney's well-known Aztec Fountain. Excellent content regarding one of her best-known commissions. Bookseller Inventory #
