About this Item

This Brigadier General of Volunteers was a Missouri politician who served in the Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska area. ANS, 1p, 7 3/4" X 9 3/4", n.p., 1864 October 26. Addressed to Lt. A.J. Harding, an aide-de-camp stationed in St. Joseph, Missouri. Very good. Minor binding traces along left edge, not affecting text. Nice war-date content penned on "Headquarters Seventh Military District of Mo." engraved letterhead. Craig notes that "Lt Col Markland of Holt Co.[unty] desires to see you in refference to Two persons from his Co -- You may implicitly rely upon any Statement he makes," boldly signed with rank ("Brig Gen") noted below. Although cryptic, this likely has to do with a meeting Craig set up later between Harding and two imprisoned locals (John W. Forbes and M.H. Owsley) who were possibly being held on bushwhacking charges -- Southern supporters in Missouri plagued Union forces there, and this guerrilla warfare tactic is most associated with Missouri Confederates. Craig was serving in the Missouri State militia at this time, and earlier had been military commander in charge of overland mail routes in Kansas and Nebraska and then had commanded the District of Nebraska Territory. R.D. Markland (b. 1816) commanded a militia company of the Missouri State Guard under the leadership of Governor Hamilton R. Gamble. Bookseller Inventory # 40465
