About this Item

The influential New England-born journalist and writer long edited the "Louisville Daily Journal" and made it the most influential Whig publication in the South and West; in 1831 he authored a popular biography of Kentucky's popular Whig senator and presidential candidate, Henry Clay, as well as a the 1860 "Prenticeana or Wit and Humor in Paragraphs"; in 1876 "The Poems of George D. Prentice" was published posthumously. ANS, 1p, 7½" X 5", Baltimore, MD, 1860 November 15. Addressed to "My Dear Sir." Very good. On pale blue lined stationery, Prentice boldly pens a note to an unknown correspondent: "I shall be in your City to lecture on the 20th. You will find me at the Lapierre [?] House." Attractive. Accompanied by a carte-de-visite steel engraved portrait of Prentice, 2¼" X 4", published by J.H. Bufford in Boston. Near fine. Gilt decorative border, with Prentice's somber head-and-shoulders visage set within a double-ruled gilt oval. Unusual and very handsome. Bookseller Inventory # 19780
