About this Item

This prolific Scottish poet, playwright and novelist influenced many modernist poets such as Yeats; best remembered for his verse in such volumes as "Diabolus Amans" (1885, his first), "In a Music Hall, and Other Poems" (1891), "Fleet Street Eclogues" (1893), "New Ballads" (1897) and "The Last Ballad" (1899); committed suicide by drowning. ANS, 1p, 4½" X 7" (lettersheet), Streatham, England, 1900 December 19. Addressed to "Mr. Heinemann" (London publisher William Heinemann, 1863-1920). Near fine. Faint single vertical fold. Boldly penned in black on pale green lettersheet bearing his blind-embossed south London address (9, Fairmile Avenue), Davidson writes this cryptic reply to the London publisher of many of his books: "Dear Mr. Heinemann, / With pleasure. / Yours very truly / John Davidson." Very curious and most attractive. Bookseller Inventory # 40475
