About this Item

Holograph receipt of hand dated Newburyport (Mass.) June 24th, (18)42 to the president of the Atlantic Insurance Co. of New York instructing them to pay the dividend due on stock holdings. Signed in full "Francis Todd". Aprox. 5" x7" sheet which appears to be the lower portion of an otherwise blank larger sheet. Francis Todd of Newburyport was the owner of the ship "Francis", a vessel engaged in the slave trade, shipping Africans between New Orleans and Baltimore. In 1829, abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison published two of his "Black List" articles condemning Todd. Todd sued Garrison for libel and secured a judgment against him in the Maryland courts for $50. When Garrison did not pay the sum, he was sentenced to six months in jail; while incarcerated, Garrison wrote a pamphlet entitled "A Brief Sketch of the Trial of William Lloyd Garrison, for an Alleged Libel of one Francis Todd, of Massachusetts". Garrison was released after seven weeks when a supporter provided the money to pay his fine. Bookseller Inventory # X149
