About this Item

This Scottish writer chronicled rural English life in numerous novels such as "Hester" and "Chronicles of Carlingford"; she once said her writing was for the "boiling of the family pot" -- hence the term "potboilers"; her incredibly prolific output include more than 120 works of fiction, travel, history and biography. ANS, 1p, 4½" X 6½", Windsor, England, n.y. ("Friday"). Addressed to Mrs. Hale. Very good. A bit of minor wear and age toning; mounting traces on verso. Unusual printed crest at top depicts a sea serpent rising up out of the water, a huge cross (with the name "Margaret" on a scroll wrapped around it) on its back. "Both Mrs. M[ ? ] and myself have great pleasure in accepting your kind invitation for Monday at half past six. Mrs. M[ ? ] begs you kindly to excuse her writing separately, as her hand is still not at all well." Boldly penned in Oliphant's usual small abominable scrawl -- but a nice and typical example.
