This brevet brigadier general distinguished himself in the Mexican-American War served with the Second Cavalry in the Apache War in Texas, and in the Civil War led the only cavalry at Bull Run. ANS, 1p, pale blue 7 3/4" X 12½", "Steamer Falcon," 1857 June 27. Addressed to Lieutenant W.E. Jones (1824-64, future Confederate general nicknamed "Grumble," at this time a brevet second lieutenant in the U.S. Mounted Rifles, 1848-57). Very good. Intriguingly cryptic note: "Col. Loring directs that you assign to the officers of this command the State-rooms & berths intended for their use on board this Steamer," plus lengthy closing salutation of course, boldly signed with rank "Adjutant R[egiment M[ounted] R[ifles]." William W. Loring (1818-86) joined the newly-formed Mounted Rifles in 1846 and fought in the Mexican-American War. Nice pre-Civil War piece with interesting connections. Bookseller Inventory # 29069
