The influential New England-born journalist and writer long edited the "Louisville Daily Journal" and made it the most influential Whig publication in the South and West; in 1831 he authored a popular biography of Kentucky's popular Whig senator and presidential candidate, Henry Clay, as well as a the 1860 "Prenticeana or Wit and Humor in Paragraphs"; in 1876 "The Poems of George D. Prentice" was published posthumously. ANS, 1p, 5" X 7½", Chambersburgh, PA, n.y. January 2 [1858 inked in another hand]. Near fine. Apologetic note "forwarded to me here. I was confined to my bed throughout the month of November. I can, without doubt, lecture for you in February." in bold pencil. Prentice was at the height of his fame at this time, having fanned the flames of the "Bloody Monday" anti-foreigner riots in Louisville in which 22 people were killed, so it's not surprising he would be fielding speech requests at this time.
