Description:

This Union general in the Civil War was an Ohio congressman (1843-51, 1863-71) known as a fierce attacker of Copperheads; he also served as U.S. minister to Brazil (1851-53) and to Great Britain (1871-76). ANS, 1p, 4½" X 7", Washington, DC, 1886 February 9. Addressed to "Senator Hale" (Eugene Hale, 1836-1918, Maine senator 1881-1911). Very good. Lightly age toned, mainly about the edges. Brief but handsomely penned in black ink, the former congressman/general/ambassador accepts an invitation: "Thank you. I'll come." Very nice example. Bookseller Inventory #
