About this Item

The author of America's first runaway bestseller -- 1850's "The Wide, Wide World," which ran through thirteen editions in its first two years and never went out of print until 1930 -- never lived up to that first novel's success again, although 30 more novels followed; in addition to her religious fiction, she penned hymns such as "Jesus Bids Us Shine"; her sister and occasional co-author Anna wrote the well-known first stanza of the children's classic song "Jesus Loves Me." AQS, 4" X 5", West Point, NY, 1878 February 23. Very good. Faint show-through from light mounting traces on verso. In her rather light, spidery script, Warner pens an excerpt from Psalm 84: "'The Lord God is a sun & / shield; the Lord will give grace & / glory; no good thing will he / withhold from them that walk uprightly.' / Ps. LXXXIV.II.," signed and dated. Warner and her sister both lived near West Point Military Academy and gave Bible lessons there to cadets; so popular were they that upon their deaths each were accorded burial at West Point Cemetery. A surprisingly uncommon autograph. Bookseller Inventory # 41205
