About this Item

Holograph transcription of two stanzas of Van Dyke's famous patriotic poem "America For Me", in ink on recto only of a single sheet and signed in full by Van Dyke at the bottom. Consists of the third and sixth (and final) stanzas, beginning "Oh, London is a man's town, there's power in the air; And Paris is a woman's town, with flowers in her hair.". The famed final verse reads "Oh, it's home again and home again, America for me!/ I want a ship that's westward bound to plow the rolling sea/ To the blessed Land of Room Enough beyond the ocean bars/ Where the air is full of sunlight and the flag is full of stars." According to Van Dyke's biography by his son Tertius Van Dyke, the poet, growing homesick after a year in Europe, composed the piece while vacationing in Gstaad. The final stanza appears on p.296 of the biography. Slight wrinkling to the single sheet, center fold from mailing, a bit of very minor chipping at the corners and left edge, not affecting the writing. Bookseller Inventory # X163
