Description:

Pick, Arnold (1851-1924). Autograph letter signed, in German, to an unidentified correspondent. Karlsbad, August 11 [n. y.]. 2 pages. 228 x 145 mm. Mounted. Fine. From German neurologist and psychiatrist Arnold Pick, discoverer of "Pick's disease" (circumscribed atrophy of the brain with the development of aphasia and presenile dementia; see Garrison-Morton 4707) and the "Pick bodies" characteristic of the disorder. He was the first to name reduplicative paramnesia (the delusional belief that a place or location exists in two or more places simultaneously), and also pioneered the term dementia praecox, an old name for what we now call schizophrenia. His letter, which describes a forensic issue, can be translated as follows: "Spectabilis! "With regard to certain occurrences at the Putzman trial I would like to give the information that expert opinions are only signed by the Dean and if the names of the referents are known it could have happened only because of a mistake or indiscretion and I think it would be advisable to give this information to the K. K. Landwehrdivision. "For your own information I would like to add that the day after the experts' meeting the names of the referents were published in the 'Bohemia.' Your very obedient A. Pick.".
