About this Item

2 pp. of a bifolium. 12mo. Dated [Wales,] Tuesday [June 8, 1886]. In black ink. On stationery with Patti's monogram embossed at head. "Mind you come to my wedding tomorrow. I expect you up here at half past ten, after which we can all start off together to the church. I remain yours truly."Slightly worn, soiled and stained; creased at folds with minor repairs to central fold; remnants of adhesive and (incorrect) date of letter notated in pencil to lower left margin of blank final page. Together with an engraving published by John A. Lowell in Boston, 1888. 178 x 177 mm. Slightly worn. "From a musical family, [Patti] toured the USA as a child prodigy with the violinist Ole Bull and in 1857 toured with Gottschalk. In 1859, when she was 16, she made her opera debut as Lucia di Lammermoor in New York, after studying the role with the conductor Emmanuele Muzio. Two years later she appeared as Amina in La sonnambula at Covent Garden, a role she repeated for her debuts in Paris (1862) and Vienna (1863). Her fame spread throughout Europe, and she was soon recognized as the greatest soprano of her day. During the 1880s she was a favourite at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. Her career continued into the 20th century and she made some recordings at her castle in Wales; they reveal her extraordinary tone-production, brilliant agility, and refined phrasing." Jon Tolansky in Grove Music Online. On June 10, 1886 Patti married her second husband, French tenor Ernest Nicolini (1834-1898), in Wales. Bookseller Inventory # 23684
