This manuscript was sent by Emily Dickinson to her sister-in-law Susan Gilbert, and inherited by Susan's daughter Martha Bianchi. The poem was first published, from this manuscript, as number XIII in "The Single Hound" (1914), Bianchi's edition of the manuscripts and letters that Dickinson had sent to Gilbert. Later editions of the poem were all published from the manuscript in Dickinson's Fascicle 28 (at Harvard's Houghton Library) until Franklin's Variorum Edition (1998) where our manuscript is recorded as 540A. On the basis of handwriting Franklin dates this poem "ca. 1863", Dickinson's most prolific year, when she wrote almost 300 poems. The manuscript, in ink, is written in 8 lines, on a single 12mo sheet of wove paper, (6-1/8 x 3-7/8 inches) folded twice vertically. It is pasted on the front free endpaper in a presentation copy of the first edition of "The Single Hound". Beneath the manuscript the page is inscribed by the editor "For Mr and Mrs Frank Mills from their country neighbor Martha G. Dickinson Bianchi." On the front pastedown endpaper (opposite the manuscript) is written in a different hand "A wedding present Sept. 15 - 1904". Martha Bianchi's diaries (at Brown University), particularly the 1914 volume, have many references to the Millses, whose marriage did occur in 1904 in Amherst. Enclosed in a half red morocco slipcase. Bookseller Inventory #
